Do I need a passport to visit the Delta?
You don’t need a passport to visit the Delta, but passports are a fun way to collect mementos of your travels. Keep reading to learn how.
What’s a passport?
The Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta National Heritage Area is one of 44 NHAs that participate in the Passport to Your National Parks Program, in addition to nearly all parks in the National Park System.
The idea is simple: Travelers can purchase a passport book that they get stamped whenever they visit a participating NHA or park in the National Park System. The stamp records the name of the NHA, the city or town where the stamping station is located, and date of the visit. It’s just like getting your official passport stamped when you enter another country, only this passport book is a handheld memento of all the incredible places you’ve visited right here in America.
The program is voluntary; passports are not required for visiting the National Heritage Area.
Where can I buy one and how much does it cost?
A variety of passport styles can be purchased online from Eastern National, which is a nonprofit partner of the National Park Service that administers the passport program nationwide. Some Delta NHA passport sites may have passport books available for sale (call ahead to find out).
Getting your passport stamped, though, is free, even at venues you might otherwise have to pay for admission.
How many places in the Delta can I get my passport stamped?
You can get your passport stamped at as many stamping stations as you can visit, but not at the sites listed on our map as “other local attractions.” However, the stamps generally contain only the name of the National Heritage Area and the city or town the stamping station is located in. So, if you visit three stamping stations in the same city, the stamps will likely be identical.
I forgot my passport book when I visited the Delta – can I get stamped retroactively?
You can request a stamp by contacting dpc@delta.ca.gov. Please provide your name and mailing address in the email.
My organization or business would like to host a stamping station – what’s required for us to do that?
Your entity must be:
- Within the NHA boundaries (PDF opens in new tab).
- A partner of the Sacramento-San Joaquin National Heritage Area (click here to learn about and apply for the Partnership Program).
- Open and accessible to the public. If an entry fee or purchase is required to enter your establishment, it cannot be required of people seeking only the passport stamp.
My organization hosts a stamping station and we’d like to order new supplies or passport books for resale. How do we do that?
To order rubber stamps, ink bottles, or ink pads, contact the Delta Protection Commission at dpc@delta.ca.gov or (916) 375-4800. You must be an existing partner.
